Questions About Our Kerry Coastal Walks
Everything you need to know about our sea cliff, puffin colony, Skellig viewpoint and slate quarry walks for active walkers and pensioners
Our walks are designed for mixed fitness levels. The puffin colony viewpoint walks are generally easier with gradual slopes and rest points, while the Skellig viewpoint walk involves moderate climbs with spectacular views. The Valentia Island slate quarry walk suits those wanting a gentler pace with fascinating geological stops. We always tell you the route distance and terrain type upfront so you can choose what suits you.
Most walks take between 2 to 4 hours including stops for wildlife viewing, photography and rest breaks. We build in time to actually enjoy what you're seeing rather than rushing through. Exact duration depends on which walk you choose and how long you want to spend at viewpoints.
Puffins return to Kerry's colonies from April through August, with peak numbers in May and June. During breeding season they're more active and visible at the nest sites. Outside these months you won't spot them as they're out at sea. Our puffin walks are timed for when they're actually there so you get the best viewing experience.
Sturdy walking boots with good grip are essential — coastal paths can be muddy and uneven even in dry weather. Bring waterproof layers since weather changes quickly on the coast. Binoculars help with wildlife spotting but aren't essential. We provide detailed packing lists for each walk so you know exactly what to bring.
The Skellig Islands are UNESCO World Heritage sites with an early Christian monastic settlement dating back over 1,400 years. From the mainland viewpoints you get dramatic views of these rocky outcrops without needing a boat. Our guides explain the history and geology so you understand why these islands matter — it's not just about the view, it's about the story.
We have routes designed specifically for walkers with varied mobility needs. The slate quarry walk on Valentia Island has accessible viewpoints with gentler gradients, and we include rest stops at scenic spots. Tell us about any mobility considerations when booking and we'll recommend the right walk and can suggest accessible parking and alternative viewing points.
